Hi guys! I get lots of questions asking about top coats, and which ones work best and all that jazz, so I want to direct you to THIS blog post by Top Coat It (ohoho her name is like what this post is about!) It’s a really great comparison of a lot of different top coats, and I think it’s super helpful, because what’s important for one person is totally different than what’s important for another person. Also, it’s just really in depth and well done, so kudos to Rachel for making such an awesome post about this kind of stuff!
(Also she didn’t ask me to feature her or anything, I just saw this and thought it was an awesome post that I want my followers to see.)
I love the hearts on the thumb and the pinky! How did you do those? Love your blog so so much. <3
For the pinky, I just dabbed on orange nail polishes in the shape of a heart with a little nail art brush. For the thumb, I first made the light blue heart shape, let that dry some, and then dragged black down over it to make a jaggedy gradient kind of effect. Thanks so much! : )
What is an easy way to do gradient nails? A couple more difficult techniques I've used don't work out for me. Thanks!
I just use a makeup sponge to put on light layers of polish heavier at the tip and lighter towards the base of the nail. I think that’s the easiest and best way to do a gradient. What’s most important is to have a light hand when doing it!
HEYY. I have spent the last 3 hours here. I read every. single. post. because they're SO GOOD. Also I'm pretty sure we're soul sisters or something because of the love of baby sloths and kittens and nail polish. Oh, and by the way, if I really need to actually ask you a question... do you ever read through your posts and be like "DAMNN GURL I am one sexy hilarious genius?" You should. THANK YOU FOR BEING FANTASTIC <3
Ahahaha thank you so much! This is one of the nicest messages I’ve ever gotten! And of course I think that about myself all the time…. Yes…
Hii! I've just discovered your tumbrl. I love nail art, and I love your nails, there are always perfect. Have you got any Youtube account with tutorials? It would be nice :D Kisses from Spain!
I do! It’s the same as my tumblr username- mrcandiipants, and right now it only has two videos on it, but I’m going to be making more videos as soon as I get out of school and have lots more free time! Thanks so much : )
Hey, I wanted to ask. How many pictures do you take of a design? Because maybe I'm picky but I take loads so I have a lot to chose from even though their all of the same design. Are you the same or do you get the shot straight away? :D
I don’t really take that many photos of designs unless I’m having trouble capturing a certain color. Normally, though, I just take about 3 photos of my nails because I have my whole spot figured out here at school. Things are gonna get difficult when I get back home though! I might need to make a light box there because I have such a hard time getting good color there
First of all, big up the nail designs, so original and fresh! Secondly, a bit of a tip for you about brushes. I used to use nail art brushes but found the bristles were a little coarse in a lot of cases so I switched to artist brushes called acrylix and they are amazing! Fuck knows what they are made of but it glides like a dream and seems to cope well with acetone remove.! Also, any tips on doing perfect stars? Much love. Mink. Ps. Do you have modelsown nail polish in America?
I really like the brushes I’m using right now, but they are deteriorating a bit quicker than I’d like (probably just because I use them so so so much), so I’ll definitely check those ones out! Thanks for the tips! for the stars I do, I start at the center and then flick outwards, but I plan on doing a tutorial on them sometime in the near future when I start making videos again. And we do have Models Own in the US, they sell it at Sephoras though I don’t own any of the colors
What do you do to avoid your tips chipping? What do you do when they chip do you take them off completely?
Base and top coat! They’re the most important part of this really. And when mine chip, basically what happens is I pick at them madly until I can take them off. My restless hands can’t let any chips stay tiny… Also I like to do my nails often, so chips are a great excuse!
so what's the deal with cuticles? I always see pictures of nails where the polish looks like it just bled from their skin down the nailbed in one smooth coat. How does one accomplish this? Push back the cuticles? Trim them? With what? Does it even matter?
There’s a product called “cuticle remover”, and a bunch of brands sell it- you can find it in CVS or any drugstore with Sally Hansen products or whatever else. Basically you just put it on your cuticles however often you need to- that really depends on the state of yours- wait a few minutes, wash it off, and then push your cuticles back. You’re not really supposed to cut your cuticles as they can get infected easily and it’s just bad for them. I also push my cuticles back after I shower because they’re softer then and it’s easier to do. That and keep them moisturized all the time! Even just rubbing hand lotion into them will help a lot.
How do you file your nails? Your nails dont look like you file them to make them look square.
You’re right, I actually really hate having square nails. I tried to have them once and I just couldn’t deal with them. For me they broke so often as squares! For my almond/oval nails, I file from the sides toward the center of the nails, keeping the center as long as possible, and the edges as close to the base of my nail as possible. I don’t really know any proper filing or shaping techniques, though, that’s just how I do it. Hope it helps!
I would like to second your idea to post normal amazing designs on your left hand and also the simpler, also just as amazing, design you would do on your right hand. I would also like to go on record and say that I weirdly always get excited to log on and see what you've done next just to sit here and say 'omg why is she so cool?!' So thank you for all your inspiration and adorable photo descriptions and polite, helpful answers :)
Thank you so much! Though I know I won’t always do this, I’ll try to when it feels like it’s worth it haha. A good suggestion! Especially because maybe it’ll be good for people to see an easier version of a manicure if they are new to nail art. Hmmm…
Alright, personal opinion question - do you prefer China Glaze or O.P.I. polish?
I prefer OPI I think. I really love the brush (though I know some people hate it), and I honestly just like their formula better than China Glaze’s. I think CG does some great colors and I own a bunch of them, but if I had to choose between the two, I’d go with OPI. That also might be because I feel like CG has been doing almost entirely glittery/shimmery colors lately, and that’s just not my thing. I love my cremes!
How long do you generally let your bottom coat of polish dry before you start with the designs? I always mess mine up because they feel dry to the touch, but they wind up being still malleable and sticky when I put on a top coat! Thank you, you're awesome :)
For the very first coat, I generally just let it dry for as long as it takes me to paint all of my nails, but this is because I like to make my first coat very thin. I don’t mind if it’s streaky, because if I’m using a 2-coater, I then just make a thicker second coat and that usually works for me. However, if the polish needs more than 2 coats, I wait for a while between the second and third coats because it’s then that you will need to worry about things being too wet and whatnot. I also like to wait for a little while before putting on the top coat because sometimes I do get myself in trouble by having the top coat dry but the polish underneath still wet, so it can pull off easily. Hope that helps! And thank you : )
So I noticed you usually take pictures of your right hand, and I was wondering how your left hand turns out because I know my right hand would be beautiful and my left would look like a child did it. Any tips/ next time you post your nails could you post a picture of your left hand too? Thanks! ps-you are awesome.
I think you got my hands mixed up, but I know what you meant haha… It depends a lot on what kind of design I’m doing if I’m even gonna paint my right hand the same as my left. For instance, with my last two posts (the zig zags and the make my day homage), I painted my right hand the same as my left. However, with the 3D cubes I did this past weekend, I did a super simplified version in the same colors on my right hand because it just wasn’t going to look nearly as good on that side.
I do also have two posts that feature my right hand. They are here and here. I think it’s good to try and paint with your non dominant hand if for nothing else but practice, but sometimes I know the design is gonna be terrible on my right hand or if I’m gonna take it off soon, or if I’m just being a lazy bum, I won’t do it. I’ll try to show you guys what I mean by doing a simplified version of a design the next time I do that! I hope I remember haha…
Hello, Mr. Candace! Obviously, like everyone else, I love your work so much. You probably get this question ALL THE TIME because I see people asking you for advice. I've recently started growing my nails out longer, but they get really brittle and break easily. I just had 2 nails break today ): So do you have any tips on how to strengthen my nails? Products to use?
Thanks so much! I’d suggest a base coat specifically targeting brittle nails. I know OPI now has their Nail Envy in different formulas, and my mom has the brittle nails kind and she says it works wonders. They’re more expensive than your average polish, but if it’s making your nails healthy, I think it’s worth it!
Nothing fancy, it’s just a Nikon Coolpix S8100 with a broken flash haha. I’ve tried using my dad’s really fancy nice camera for taking photos of my nails, but I honestly prefer my little dinky guy for photos. Finding good lighting and having macro abilities is what’s most important anyways!
Hi! I love your blog, just so you know! I was wondering, what are some really simple designs to start off with nail art? I've recently started practicing, but I can tell you, I'm really not that good. Also, if you have or know of any tutorials on the ones you reccomend, that's be great! Thanks :)
I think animal print is one of the easiest patterns to start off with- either zebra or leopard print, and if you go on youtube and search for either of those things, you’ll come up with tons of tutorials. I suggest you find a few people on youtube that do tutorials that are easy to follow and that you enjoy watching (I know tons of people really love Cutepolish) then that helps a lot. I also have 2 tutorials up on youtube, one for ikat nails and another for a floral pattern, (my youtube name is also mrcandiipants) so you could check those out if you wanted! I hope this helps! : )
How do you get so many people to follow your blog?x x
I get a lot of questions like this, and I never really know how to answer, but I’m gonna give it a shot. I could be entirely unhelpful and just say, make good stuff, and make good stuff often, but that’s kind of a given.
So instead, I’ll say, post somewhat frequently, practice all the time, let your personality show in your posts, send messages to artists you admire (not asking for them to follow or anything, just saying something nice or asking a question, something like that), and don’t get frustrated when you don’t immediately have tons of followers. This is something that (for most people) happens really slowly. It took me at least 3 months before I had more than 10 followers, so get excited about every little milestone in followers you have, because otherwise you’ll go crazy. I guess most importantly is just to not get discouraged if you don’t have lots of followers right away. Because you won’t.
hey I was wondering if you had any advice on how to keep your nail polish from chipping or peeling completely off??? It seems every time I try and polish them nicely, they end up destroyed by the next day! Any tips or products that might help? PS LOOOOOOVE your blog :)
I think the most important part here is keeping your nails well-maintained and using a good base coat. If you put on polish when your nails are oily or dirty at all, that will make the polish chip faster (not that I’m saying you have dirty nails haha, I promise!) I’d suggest just wiping your nails with a tiny little bit of remover before painting them to get a good clean foundation.
Then, if you have a big problem with chipping and peeling, they make base coats that specifically are somewhat sticky so that the polish adheres and stays better. Orly makes one that’s really good at lengthening the life of your polish, I believe it’s called Orly Bonder, and it’s kind of orangey in the bottle. A good top coat also is important for keeping your polish looking nice!
I was wondering and you may have answered ot before but for your nail art do you just use nail polish or acrylic paint?
I’ve tried using acrylic paint before, but for the kind of nail art I do, I much prefer using polish. I just have never been in a situation with my nail art that acrylic paint would work better than any polish I have, but I think it’s totally personal preference!
How do you become an editor on Tumblr? And where did you learn how to do nail art :)? Love your nail art!
To become an editor, you just kinda get chosen, I just got an email one day. And as far as where I learned to do nail art, I’d have to say I’ve done most of my learning on tumblr haha! Just practice and always be looking for new designs and techniques!
First things first...you are SO talented and (maybe more important) HILARIOUS! Love your blog! Just a quick question....where do you get nail studs?? I have been looking EVERYWHERE for them and can not seem to find them!
haha thank you so much! and i got my studs from bornprettystore.com, they’re listed under “resin rhinestones” i believe. hope that helps!
Hey! So i have tried everything to whiten my nails and nothing has worked ( lemon, toothpaste, baking soda). I use Seche Base to protect my nails. Do you have any tips? P.s your nail art is awesome
haha thank you! I have a problem with keeping my nails white as well, and I’ve tried all the same things as you and I didn’t find any of those techniques very helpful either. What I find works best is just really thoroughly buffing your nails to get off the top layer of staining, and then to soak your fingers in some warm water with a denture whitening tablet dissolved in it. It’ll take some time to get them significantly whiter, but I hope that helps!
What type of brush do you use for your tribal nails????
For just about all of my nail art i just use a pretty tiny little brush I got from an art store, and then cut off half of the bristles to make it even skinnier. This reminds me that I need to do a post on the materials I use… Thank you!
Yes! Absolutely! Not within this month, but when I finish this semester and am home for summer break, I plan on doing them again. I have a lot of ideas, and I’m excited to start filming them again. It’s been a long time haha…
How do you get so many people to reblog your posts? I have a nail art blog as well, and I feel that no matter how hard I try, I only get about 10 notes, max. YOU MUST BE A GODDESS
Haha it took some time, honestly, but now I have a really great following which always helps. It’s crazy, but I’m almost at 3000 followers. it’s NUTS. I do still get posts where I get no more than 10 notes, so don’t be discouraged! Just keep working at it- also, what’s your blog? I’d love to check it out!
on your most recent zig zag design, how did you do the pattern on your middle and index finger?
it was actually really deceptively easy. i chose two reds and two blues, and dabbed on tiny little dots of the lighter one on whichever side of the nail over my sheer white base, and then i did the same thing with the darker color over that. so simple, but i love how it turned out!
Do you ever do tutorials? All I see are pictures of your adorable nails but no explanations and what not >.<
I have a youtube channel but unfortunately it only has 2 videos on it… It’s mrcandiipants just like on here, and though I won’t be updating it soon, once I get home from school in about a month, I do plan on making tutorials MUCH more often. I hope you like them! And if you ever want a tutorial for a specific look I’ve done, just let me know! Thanks : )
