Hey! So I love nail art and doing my nails, and I had a couple questions about doing it for money (like you do). How do you advertise? Or like, get your word out, I guess. Is it just word of mouth? And when it comes to doing other people's nails, do you do like a full manicure (soaking cuticles, full prep work, etc) or just paint them? And do you transport your polishes to wherever you're going? I realize that's a lot of questions, but I'm really curious! Thanks! Your nails are always great.
Thanks so much! As for advertising, it’s pretty much just word of mouth, but also my mother (once again, love that woman) is super proud of my tumblr and is ALWAYS showing it to people, so I actually get a decent amount of business from her haha. I actually want to get business cards soon so my mom can give those to people who are interested.
Sometimes people will come to my house, and other times, like if I’m doing it for a birthday party or something, I just go to them. I have a little makeup bag kinda thing that I got at target (it’s a lot like this), and I bring a small thing of remover, some cotton balls, my favorite brushes, and then a bunch of polishes. A lot of what I bring depends on the people whose nails I’m painting- if it’s younger girls I’ll bring lots of bright colors and glitters, because that’s what I figure they’ll like and that kind of stuff.
I don’t do a full manicure- I’ll buff if necessary and file or shape nails, but I don’t use any cuticle cutters or nail clippers just because it’s generally not needed and I don’t feel wholly comfortable doing it.
Hope that answers all your questions! If you have any more, feel free to ask! : )
Hey there, we really enjoy looking at your blog, learning new things and getting great ideas. When we was scrolling through your archive the Galaxy nails really stood out us!! We were wondering if you could tell us how to do them or make a tutorial. Thank you for all of the creative talent that keeps inspiring us to experiment with newdesign designs Thanks again! Nicole, Avery & Shandelle from Canada :)
Thanks so much! I don’t think I’m gonna do a tutorial for galaxy nails (though that could always change) just because there are already so many AMAZING tutorials for them out there! Check out Attacked Astoria’s tutorial here, I really like it and I think hers are really beautiful. If you need more help or want a video, though, just go on youtube and search “galaxy nail tutorial” and I promise you’ll find lots of great results!
how many coats does it take you to get a nude completely opaque? like somoan sands or bobbing for baubles.
Bobbing for Baubles Brooch the Subject (I kept calling it Bobbing for Baubles, but that’s actually a navy polish. Whoops!) generally takes just 2 coats, because it’s a more opaque nude (similar to Zoya Avery), but Samoan Sands is sheerer, so it can be anywhere from 3 to 4 coats depending on how opaque you want it. I think I prefer wearing 2 or 3 coats of it, though, as it’s kind of a “my nails but better” look for me, when I want something nude and unassuming and pretty.
Soooo you told me that you found oval/round nails to be strongest and they don't break as easily as square or squoval nails. Just wanted to let you know that I have had them more rounded than I used to and they haven't broken once! Just saying, you are a nail genius. Love ya, Fridge sooon!!! <3 you know who.
WAWAWEEWAAAA HIII LIIIIIZ. So glad to hear your nails are stronger!! And yes, we much meet up at some point in the near future. I need me some thirsty dog! : )
i was just wondering if you could do i tutorial about how you get like different colors on one nail like in sections and it looks so clean, i really want to be able to do that :p
Yeah I could definitely do something like that. A real quick trick to doing that though is using a striper brush to put in the color, and then to outline it in black (or whatever color you want). This automatically makes the sections look really crisp and clean!
Hi. Just so you know I love your blog. You are my biggest inspiration.. :) I was wondering if you could tell me how you get your line so straight?
Thanks so much! So glad to hear I inspire you : ) And the biggest trick I have to straight lines (besides practicing all the time) Is resting both your hands on a table as you’re making the lines, so that you won’t have to deal with as much shaking when you’re painting the lines. Just go slowly at first, and you’ll get much better really quickly. Hope that helps!
could you do a tutorial on drip nails pleeeeeeeeease?
Possibly? I know there are already a bunch of tutorials out there, and to be honest I’m just not that great at drip nails. I’ll have to see! I have a lot of tutorials that will be above this on the list, though.
A few months I guess? I got it over my winter break, and I think I started posting nail designs on some kind of regular basis in like September, so a few months. I think it depends mostly on how often you get featured to become an editor though? I’m not really sure though, I have no say in that stuff.
heyyyy just wanted to say i love your tutorials, i'm glad you're finally posting more!!!! fun to watch and cute designs, my florals didn't turn out as perfectly as yours but they're getting tons of compliments :)
Thanks so much! I’m glad I’m doing more of them again too. I’m really glad to hear the floral one worked out for you! Expect more up soon!
hi! so i know you're mostly nail polish but i thought you might know better than anyone: my nails have been really weak and constantly chipping and breaking even after i cut them and i've left them bare because i thought they needed some sun but they're still like dead. HELP ME! i want to paint them again but they're so ugly and gross. layers peel off at the tips. what do i do?
Buff them, so all the peely parts are smoothed down, and then use a strengthening base coat religiously. There are tons of them out there, just figure out which one works for you, and use that under your nail polish. You’ll be polishing your pretty little nails again in no time!
do you purchase all the nail polishes you own? or do you get sent them for review? and what do your parents think about your "obsession"? because my mother greatly disapproves, and so i have to hide my 100 or so bottles in the cupboard-under-the-stairs, harry potter style. hell yeah.
I’ve never been sent any for review, so yeah I buy the vast majority of my polishes- as in it’s very difficult for me to leave stores without a new bottle of polish. Thankfully, my family is really supportive of my addiction and my mom actually loves to buy me polishes if she sees one that she thinks I’ll like (love that woman). I just make sure that I’m being somewhat productive with the obsession, like by having this blog and painting nails for money. The polishes are never sitting around unused, and as far as addictions go, nail polish is pretty cheap/benign.
I'm not sure if you have answered this before but when you do your framing nails how do you do it? Do you just carefully draw an outline? Or do you do the use the outline as your base and then Ruffian/French tip it??? (if that made any sense) I'm just curious and scared to try them myself for some reason! lol Thanks!
I’ve tried both ways, actually, and I think I prefer just outlining it really carefully- that’s what I did on my AMERICA nails haha. I suggest just trying both out and see which works better for you!
Can you recommend any good light/medium toned nudes?
OOOoooOoOoOOOHHhhHHHH yeah. I love nudey colors. If you’re looking for something more skin-toned, check out Essie Bobbing for Baubles Brooch the Subject or Zoya Avery or OPI Samoan Sands. For more grey-toned nudeys (which I looooooove for nail art especially) there’s OPI Did You Ear About Van Gogh or Skull and Glossbones, Essie Sand Tropez, or L’Oreal Walk On the Beach. Those are all my favorites, hope they work out for you! (I have way too many nudes if you can’t tell)
OH And American Apparel California Trooper is a gorgeous light nude. Ugh. Too many to list.
This is embarrassing to answer. I just counted because I got this question and I had been curious for awhile anyways, but not including top coats, base coats and that kind of stuff, I’m at 297. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME. WHAT IS MY LIFE. Also note the color I have the most of is blues, at a whopping 40 not including teals and the like. Jesus.
How often do you clean your brushes in between nails? I just started nail art and I find myself cleaning my brushes after each nail when I use nail polish. Do you have any tips to prevent the brushes from getting mucky so quickly?
I think a lot of this depends on what kind of polish you use and how quickly you are working. If you’re using a quick dry polish, you’re gonna need to clean your brush more often just because it’ll get goopy quicker. The faster you work and the thinner your polish, the less often you’ll have to clean off your brushes. Sometimes I can do all ten of my fingers without cleaning, but more often I clean after I finish one hand.
Hey so I was wondering what kinda polishes you mostly use, like the brand. Cause I love the way non shimmer polishes look but I've only got like two cause I can't find any. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places or not hard enough.
I use a big variety of polishes, but I’d say my most-used brands are probably Essie and American Apparel, and I’d say these brands are mostly creme polishes (though Essie does have plenty of shimmers, too). Revlon and OPI also have lots of creme polishes, as well as Sally Hansen and Wet n WIld. I’d say just keep an eye out at your local drugstores or whatnot, because there are definitely creme polishes out there!
So, I just went through your *entire* blog. E-N-T-I-R-E. And bookmarked 80% of your manis. You must make more youtube tutorials. Because, you're awesome. And now that it's 4am and I'm bleary-eyed, I'm going to bed. kthxbai. :)
Ahahaha thank you so much! And I am making more tutorials, have no feaaaar! (ps thanks for the second message about my art too, that’s super appreciated! and yes you should get a tumblr account!)
i sawed the site where you buy your brushes and stuff . I'm from portugal , they sell to here and its is reliable?? xoxo ps: sorry for the bad english ahaha
I got them from Amazon, so I think they would ship to Portugal. And as for their reliability, they’ve gotten really excellent feedback with the website, so they look pretty reliable to me! Hope that helps!
Your nails are amazing how long do they usually take you to do?
Thanks! A usual manicure takes me from probably 20 to 40 minutes, so not terribly long. Usually I spend the bulk of my time fixing mistakes or making changes when I’m not happy with how something has come out or deciding what I’m actually going to do. When it comes to actually painting the nails, I’m super quick. I guess that’s a good thing, though, seeing as I do my nails all the time!
So I’m trying to respond to all the messages I’ve gotten in the past two days right now, but I’m down at my grandma’s house in the boonies of Southern Virginia, so it’s just not working out right now. It might take me some time to answer all the messages I’ve recieved (and trust me I love all of them), so if I don’t answer right away, don’t be discouraged! Also, if you have any questions or requests from me and have never been brave enough to ask, please do! I love getting questions! Even if you are a newbie to the nail blogging department and want me to check out your blog, go ahead and ask! I love interacting with all of my followers, and that’s what keeps this really fun for me : ) Just don’t ask me to promote you, please. I won’t, and it will probably make me think a little (just a little) bit less of you.
In other news, I saved a tiny lizard today and learned that frozen chicken bowling was a thing. GOD BLESS AMERICA. I LOVE THE SOUTH.
Heyyy! Your like absolutely AMAZING at nail art! I was wondering how you clean your nail art brushes and stuff, because i bought nail art brushed off Amazon and I'm hardly even using them because i don't know how to use half of them and i'm not really good at cleaning them! Please help!!!
Thanks so much! I have a big bottle of pure acetone that I use to clean my brushes. I just wipe as much polish off the brush as I can, dip it right into the bottle, swirl it around a bit, then pull it out and wipe it on a cotton ball. Repeat that until all of the polish is gone! And as for learning how to use the brushes, just mess around with them on nail wheels, your nails, or even just a piece of paper to figure out what you want to do!
Hi! I love your tumblr and you have a lot of talent! I also make nail art and i take them to school. i just wanned to be different from the other girls but now , they started to imitate me! maybe i should stop making nail art . what do you think ?
Nooo don’t stop doing nail art just because other girls are imitating you! If anything, you should be flattered by this- they thought what you were doing was really cool, so they started doing it too! How great is that? Keep up with what you’re doing and keep getting better at it, and keep coming up with new designs. Don’t stop doing something you like just because other people caught on to the trend. If that was the case for me, I would have stopped doing nail art a year ago when all my friends started doing it too
Unless, of course, you only started doing nail art to be different. If that’s the case, buzz all your hair off or something, then see how many girls imitate that!
Tutorial for the wave nails please? (: Theyre so cool! And is there a way to do them without a striping brush if you dont have one?
I’ve gotten a bunch of requests for the waves tutorial, so I’m definitely gonna do one soon-ish. And you could absolutely do the dragging bit with a needle or toothpick or something of the sort- the effect will be a little bit different, but the overall look of the nail wouldn’t change all that much.
Oh god this is so difficult… I love Chalkboard Nails a lot, VeryEmily is also up there. El Salonsito does seriously amazing designs, too. Rebecca Likes Nails is awesome, she does really girly designs that aren’t always my style, but she does them so well! Uhh shoop I don’t knowww… OH Disco Nail! The stuff they do seriously blows my mind. I don’t understand how it’s possibly. Seriously.
Wasn't there a cat tutorial that was identical to the one you did but with smaller cats? I just think it's kinda messed up you called it YOUR cat nails and didn't give any credit to the original artist. :[
I realized that when I was making the description. We make them slightly differently, but for all intents and purposes they’re the same design. I do link it back to Wondernail every other time that people have asked for a tutorial.
However, the tutorial and the design are both mine- making them to cover your whole nail is technically different. I was certainly inspired by her and her tutorial, and I am gonna put a link to her tutorial in my description to account for the inspiration from her, but I don’t think what I did was wrong. I mean if you think about it, there are hundreds of tribal or leopard print tutorials out there that are all slightly different, but they’re not all crediting whichever person first inspired them to do that print. Eh. I’m on the fence about how “messed up” this is. Sorry?
I saw an anon asked about quick-dry sprays and I just wanted to say that I've tried 2: OPI's spray and these drops that smell like watermelon by Nail Life. They both work, but Nail Life is a better bang for your buck and covers better than the spray. Get it at Sally's :)
Awesome, thanks! I’ll publish this so they allllll know. : )
