Could you possibly do a tutorial on the blue sparkle tip nails on your dashes and heart design? I was hoping you would do it on the tutorial you just did, but to no prevail. I love you and your blog and your nails are always and inspiration to me<3 You're HILARIOUSSSS AND BEUATIFULLL btw c:
Check out my gradient video! It’s just a gradient, but using a metallic gold polish instead of another creme!
Pardon ma'am would you perchance offer a recommendation on select golden nail lacquer? (Glitter, metallic, etc)
Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear has a really great gold, as does their Complete Salon Manicure line. I also have one by Borghese I really like. I used to have Bling Dynasty by OPI which was a yellowy gold, but also really nice too!
Speaking of pure acetone, what is your opinion on it as a nail polish thinner? I live in NZ and nail polish thinners (actually, all nail products) are insanely expensive. But I've been meaning to pop down to the hardware store and buy some pure acetone for clean up anyway... so if it's likely to work to thin old polish too, then I'll definitely stock up on extra.
I’ve never used it as such (actually never used thinner in general…), but I don’t think you’re supposed to use it that way. I’ve heard it destroys the integrity of a nail polish or something, but if you have some polish that is unusable without thinning and you have no real thinner around, why not try it out that way? At worst, you’ll throw away a polish you weren’t going to use anyway! Just make sure you just add a few drops at a time, I figure. There’s no harm in doing some experimenting and seeing what works for you
How do you clean your nail art brushes? o= (I have the same ones as you! Woooahh!) Mine get all bristle-y cos I can't get all the nail polish off after I use them.
Dip them in acetone, wipe off on a piece of paper/post-it note/cotton ball, and repeat until they’re clean. You MUST use pure acetone, it’s the only thing I’ve found that gets them truly, truly clean. I really need to make a video on this. Maybe I’ll do one really quick tonight. Hm.
You did a really cute robot deign a while back, just wondering if you ever did a tutorial on how you did it? :3
I have not done a tutorial for it, but I was trying to think of what else I want to do videos on, so that’s a great idea! Thanks. Anything else people still want tutorials for that I haven’t gotten to yet?
Yeah you lost a nail art follower.. Why? Because you liked Paul Ryan. Which then means you dont give a SHIT about womens rights, or peoples rights at all. Dont you understand what will happen if he gets elected!! Women will become dirt! Actually read up on his and Mitts plans and learn! Just dont vote cause hes "HOT".
Oh, GOD. I liked a gifset of John Stewart making fun of Paul Ryan, but the only image that showed up was the first one that just showed him giving a speech. I am 100% not not voting for him and Romney. Also, anybody that thinks he’s hot is seriously confused. I am incredibly invested in women’s rights and could never vote for a candidate that planned on taking them away. Just so you know.
I was actually thinking about this the other day. I’m starting to creep up on 5000 followers (WAT) and I was thinking I might do a nail art contest kind of thing for that, but I’m not sure what I’d want the prize(s) to be! ANybody have any cool ideas? Did you like the prizes of the last giveaway?
Hi! I love your tutorials :P You seem really down-to-earth and chill! Just wondering if you don't mind me asking, what's your major?
Thanks so much! I do like to think that I’m a pretty laid-back person haha. I am an english major, and concentrated in creative writing. Basically I love what I’m studying and love that I get to be creative and write stories and stuff, but I have literally no idea what I’m gonna do with that… Whoops…..
Hi Candice! I just did zigzags following your video tutorial, and they turned out great. Unfortunately they got a bit smudged during topcoat :(. I just wanted to know what topcoat you use to not get your nails smudged errywhar, or any tips you have for drying before topcoat? Thanks!
I use any of the Sally Hansen Quick Dry Topcoats. There are a few different versions of them, and my favorite is called “Dries Instantly”, but that one isn’t everywhere. Pretty much any of them work really well in my experience. As far as smudging goes, putting on a thick layer of topcoat is what will protect from that, so that when you brush it on, only the clear coat touches your nail art, and your brush just glides lightly over the top. Using as few strokes as possible helps too!
How do you get your lines so straight when you're painting your nails? My hands just shake and the polish goes everywhere...
Practice! And a long, super skinny striper brush. Mostly practice though. When using a striper, you don’t want to move your hand down much, but rather get as long a length of the brush on your nail as possible, and then slide it along smoothly. The more of the brush that is on the nail, the less room you’ll have to wiggle around and screw it up.
Hey, I love your blog! :D I just happened to see some YouTube videos on "velvet nails", supposedly the newest nail trend, and I was wondering if you had tried it out, and if so what are your opinions on them?
Thanks! As far as velvet manicures- and any of the textured fads that have been going around lately- I think they’re really cool for stuff like fashion shows and photo shoots and maybe if you have a special event or something, but are too much and seriously impractical for everyday.
Then again, this is coming from a person who A- has never tried them, and B- wears cremes and only cremes on a day-to-day basis. Anything glittery or 3d or textured just doesn’t appeal to me. Studs are where I draw the line for my own nails.
That being said, I think the velvet nails are the coolest of any of those textured manis. They are edgy and elegant and awesome if you wanted to stand out for a night are so. I need to cut myself off before I ramble anymore now…
Pure, 100% acetone! I have an enormous bottle of the stuff that is pretty much black now from swirling my nail art brushes in it, but it’s definitely best for cleaning them. Just swirl, wipe on a cotton ball, and repeat til the brush is clean!
Hello! 1. I want to tell you how much I adore your work! (Especially the kitty butts!) 2. I watched your gradient tutorial and I wanted to ask about the applicator. Most tutorials use cosmetic sponges, and this was the first time I've seen someone use a eye shadow sponge. I am curious what made you decide to use an eye shadow sponge? In no way am I saying this is wrong or whatever. I am curious about your experience with gradients, as I plan to try it for the first time. Thank you for your time!
Hello back! 1. Thanks so much! I was a big fan of the kitty butts too haha. 2. I think I ultimately decided to use an eyeshadow sponge because it was easier to hold and fits the shape/size of nails better than a foundation sponge. I find they tend to have a more open kind of sponging than the usual makeup sponges that people use, so the gradient can be a little more coarse- so a lot of that depends on what you like. If I’m looking for something super smooth and gradual, I’ll use the regular makeup sponges to do mine, but if I want it to be more obvious then I’ll go with the eyeshadow applicator. Good question!
I would like those little stands you use to paint the designs on your nail tips. What are they called? I am armature and need all of new supplies? Help !!!
Are you talking about the thing that I showed you guys from my instagram? It’s THIS thing, and while I got the 64 set, there are other smaller ones. It’s surprisingly compact though, and really nice for when I’m trying out new designs. Also cheap. Cheap is good.
*thanks Sarah, I R DUM and forgot the link that was the point of this post in the first place…*
i want to start a nail blog but i kinda suck so should I? And i was wondering were you always amazingly good at nail art when you first started or were you born with your amazing talent
Do it! I have by no means always been as good as I am now (seriously- go look through my archive to about a year ago when I started this silly thing.) I got sooo much better so much more quickly once I started mine, because seeing photos of your nails next to people who are insanely talented will really show you what you need to work on, and give you the motivation to do so! It’ll be a slow start for sure, but you’ll get there!
its very rainy here. poo. hope youre havin fun at the beach. im a jelly-us monster. oh ya! my question: have any of your polishes blown up? cuz i went on a plane trip once and when i got my bag from the cool carusel there was a big pink stain on the polish baggie cuz my sinful colours pink exploded.
It was very rainy at the beach too, so don’t be too jealous. And I just got home today! As far as your question goes, I haven’t had polishes explode on me (though I have had one break one time when I was super hungover and my nail polish unit magically fell over and I was in no state to pick it up) and I think it might be just that you didn’t pack it in a way that protected it enough. I know airlines are preeetty hard on our luggage so I’d suggest getting a little carrier specifically for polishes when you travel that has decent padding, and then even if one does break or leak it won’t get over allll of your things since polish is practically impossible to get out of fabric. I know this. I’ve tried.
Can you recommend another great off-white other than Virgin from Urban Outfitters?
Honestly, no, I can’t. I wish I could find another off-white that I love quite as much (or another one at all), but I can’t. However, I know that OPI’s My Boyfriend Scales Walls is a white with some grey in it, so it’s not as stark as most colors. Other than that, I don’t really have any suggestions. Does anybody else?
it's not like your videos are any better.. your voice is pretty damn annoying to be honest and you blabber way too much. also your designs are a bit too complex. .-. you're an amazing nail artist but honestly who is going to go buy special art brushes, mix up nail polish, and have the patience to copy your design for a person who wants to just do their nails for the week?
Eh, I expected this when I wrote that about Cutepolish. Like I said, our videos are vastly different and I’m still getting started out. Some people are gonna be willing to get brushes and mix paints, others don’t want to. To each her own! I just don’t see the point in doing super simple designs without the least bit of complexity when there are already literally hundreds of tutorials on those kinds of designs. That’s her thing, and she does it well. Boom. Nice Candice.
what do you think of cutepolish's nail art tutorials on youtube?
Okay, so I feel very qualified to answer this question right now as I SOMEHOW just watched like ten of her videos as I was painting my own nails and needed some background noise.
I’m not a fan. The longer I was listening to her speak, the more disingenuous she sounded and the more I felt like I was listening to a robot. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great, super easy tutorials for people that are new to nail art, but OH GOD her voice and the whole attitude of the videos just bothers me deeply, and I’m not sure if I can even pinpoint why.
It might be that our style of tutorials is just so VASTLY different that I can’t fathom why you’d do your videos her way, but I don’t think that’s it. It’s part of it, because I do find her videos lacking in personality, and I think we can all agree, based on the bizarre antics of my intros, that mine do not, and I don’t like that. (oh god comma overload)
I also kind of hate the way she pronounces words like “polish” or “beautiful” and I imagine her sneering throughout the whole video. Then again I pronounce pink with a long i and water is wudder, so who am I to talk?
Also not a fan of the whole “let’s get this Cutepolish design started!” I’m sorry, since when are cupcake nails or zebra print specifically Cutepolish designs? That confuses me.
To be honest, it’s probably that I’m a nail art snob and I’m not a big fan of her nail art and she has approximately 100,000 times more subscribers than I do and I’m just a jealous little fgjvdrshn. That’s definitely part of it.
OKAY, JUST READ THIS OVER, AND I’M A MEAN PERSON. If you’re a beginner and want some simple tutorials, check hers out, see if you’re into them. They’re certainly straight to the point and easy to follow and very short and sweet and all that. If you’re not a fan there are 1000 other nail artist people that would love to instruct you. Also there’s yourself to instruct yourself, and I think you’re probably full of more ideas than you even realize and everyone wants to see the designs coming out of your own brain. I’m getting too mushy smushy now and I need to cut myself off. WOMP. BYE. OK. WAT.
Mr. Candice I'm so confused! Do your right hand nails turn out as nice as they do on your left hand? I'm asking this because I can never do my nails as well when I use my left hand!
Oh my gosh no, they never turn out quite as well, and if it’s ever close it’s because I spend at least twice as much time painting my right hand as I do on my left. It is truly the greatest hardship of our generation that we aren’t all ambidextrous.
candice stop having an awesome summer doing OTHER stuff. come back. RIGHT NOW.
Yeah, about this, I’m not actually having an awesome summer doing stuff…. These past two weeks have been CRAZY and I feel really bad for neglecting you all! My friend that was visiting just left my house like five minutes ago though and I have a pretty free afternoon so I think it’s time to do some serious nail art. SORRY FOR NEGLECTING YOU ALL! I’ve been meaning to write a post like this for awhile and this message was the perfect opportunity to do it. so. BOOM. HI. HELLO. I AM NOT DEAD. HEY.
